Diabetes: Alzheimer’s and Diabetes Could Be Linked Diseases II

The group of researchers from Brown University Medical School analyzed, in the frontal part of the brain, one of the major area affected by Alzheimer’s, insulin and insulin receptor function. The team discovered that the levels of insulin receptors and the brain’s ability to respond to insulin decreased as the severity of Alzheimer’s increased. According to the experts, insulin receptors were nearly 80 percent lower than in a normal brain in the most advanced stage of Alzheimer’s. Two abnormal situations related to insulin in Alzheimer’s were also found by researchers. The first abnormal situation was that as the disease progressed, levels of insulin dropped. In relation to the second one, experts explained that insulin and its related protein, insulin-related growth factor-I, lose the ability to bind to cell receptors, which creates a resistance to the insulin growth factors, causing the cells to malfunction and die. For the neuropathologist at Rhode Island Hospital and professor of pathology at Brown University Medical School, Suzanne M. de la Monte, this means that they are able to show that insulin impairment happens early in the disease, as well as they are able to show it is linked to major neurotransmitters responsible for cognition. “We’re able to show it’s linked to poor energy metabolism, and it’s linked to abnormalities that contribute to the tangles characteristic of advanced Alzheimer’s disease. This work ties several concepts together and demonstrates that Alzheimer’s disease is quite possibly a Type 3 diabetes”, explains de la Monte, the leader of the research.

The Dangers of Avian Flu as it Spreads to More Countries

As some of you will know, I first started writing about Avian or Bird Flu in May, 2005, since then it has spread to more countries, with the latest being the continent of Africa, namely Nigeria just announced, Turkey and Romania where there has been a number of deaths in the last few weeks. I have also mentioned before that I believe that two of the best things that anyone can do to help themselves, is to ensure that their Immune System is functioning as efficiently as is possible, in other words, using your own preventative system to ward off the virus, and the second thing to do is to say a prayer. Whether you visit my websites and use the products that I offer to help your immune system, or whether you go somewhere else, that is your choice, but, the important thing is that you do something. Medical supply companies state that in recent times there has been a huge increase in the sale of surgical masks, about 500%. Please don’t think that they will help you as a normal surgical mask is worn by surgeons and nurses to protect the patient from receiving germs breathed out by medical staff, not to prevent the surgical staff from receiving germs from the patient. Masks in fact could enhance the spread of flu, because when a mask becomes damp through breathing, it loses nearly all of it efficiency in protecting the wearer from inhaling the germs. If you touch your mask with your fingers the virus can be spread wherever your fingers go, door knobs, touching your own nose or mouth, or other peoples hands. Masks that can filter out germs, are usually large and cumbersome, also expensive, and they must have a very secure seal around your nose and mouth, they are a long way from being 100% secure. The current drugs available, like Tamiflu, might help, once you have the flu, and there is currently no vaccine available, to prevent you from catching the flu, because it can’t be produced until the virus has mutated, that fortunately has not happened yet. If mutation occurs, the virus will be isolated and then rushed to the three laboratories in the world that is used by the United Nations, World Health Organisation to produce a vaccine to fight, prevent and to overcome any pandemic. These three laboratories are usually the ones used each year to design the anti flu vaccine, that is used worldwide, then it is passed to various manufacturers for mass production. You should be getting the idea, that if this virus becomes pandemic, perhaps hundreds of thousands of people will die, at this point in time it is still only going from bird to bird and to human and not human to human. Hopefully the virus will not mutate, unfortunately a number of scientists believe that it is not will it mutate, but when. There is wide concern in Europe, the Governments of countries near to, or bordering with Turkey, are taking numerous precautions to stop the spread, the problem is, how do you prevent birds from flying over the border? birds know nothing about borders or passports and visa’s. There is without doubt a spread of Bird Flu, as it first started in Asia spreading to adjoining countries by passing from bird to bird, with a few human deaths everywhere that it has been, I feel sure that it will not stop in Turkey, that would be very naive, it will spread to bordering countries, where lots of farm livestock such as chickens will have to be put down, making chicken and eggs more expensive due to short supply. I will once again emphasise that the important things to do, is to make sure you have an efficient immune system and say a prayer.

Can Alzheimer’s Be Prevented?

Alzheimer’s disease is a condition affecting up to 4.5 million Americans. While there is no known cure, studies have been conducted that indicate there may be ways of preventing the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. The disease is characterized by symptoms such as forgetfulness, memory loss, and reduced ability to concentrate, and in later stages the sufferer may display anxiety and delusions, loss of speech and inability to sit up or walk. It is a slow disease with symptoms manifesting and worsening over the period of many years. The now famous, groundbreaking “nun study” went a long way toward identifying characteristics that would indicate the likelihood of Alzheimer’s onset later in life. 100 nuns have been studied over a period of fifteen years, beginning in 1991. Over the course of those years, their genes have been tested and analyzed, physical balance and strength charted, and cognitive tests run to determine how many words the women could remember several minutes after reading them, how many animals they could name in a minute, and if they could correctly count coins. The research shows that people who scored lower on cognitive ability tests when young were more likely to develop Alzheimer’s later in life. Early cognitive ability was measured based on writings done by the nuns while in their early 20’s. Those showing more “idea density” – the number of ideas expressed in the fewest number of words – and better linguistic and grammar skills had a much lower incidence of Alzheimer’s later in life. Scientists are of the opinion that good cognitive skills early on creates a sort of “neurocognitive reserve” which will be drawn on later, effectively preventing Alzheimer’s. Exercising and improving cognitive skills via writing, reading and learning – anything that stimulates the brain – may go a long way toward active, clearheaded and graceful aging. There are a number of other things, as well, that you can do to help prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s. Many of these prevention techniques involve limbering the mind and working on memory skills long before Alzheimer’s onset is a danger. Just having a mentally stimulating job that involves creative thinking or manipulation of data is shown to have a connection to lower incidence of Alzheimer’s later in life. Doing crossword puzzles and playing card games were found to have a significant positive impact on later mental dexterity. Employ memorization techniques used by actors. Actors don’t merely memorize a series of words. They also combine appropriate movements, and evaluate the intent behind the words to be delivered. This “active-experiencing” method of memorization was shown to also improve the memory and cognitive skills in older people who were taught the technique. Limbering your mind now may promote a limber mind in your latter years. Proper diet and exercise promote good health in general and may ward off countless problems including Alzheimer’s onset. The addition of fish oils, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C to the diet have all shown to contribute to a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s. Keeping cholesterol at a healthy level prevents build-up of amyloid plaques in the brain – a characteristic in Alzheimer’s. Finally, physical activity has been shown to prevent deposits in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Exercise your mind and body, and make good lifestyle choices, as the only “cure” for Alzheimer’s as yet, is prevention. While there is believed to be a genetic component which would predispose someone to the risk of Alzheimer’s, awareness, early planning and mental exercise, and smart dietary choices may aid to reduce your likelihood of developing this mysterious and debilitating disease. A healthy mind and a healthy body now will make for a healthy mind and body later.

Smoking Cancer may cause most cancer in black males U.S. than other ethnic groups

For African American males, smoking may be a serious problems because the last researches have estimated that the cancer death rate for black men it is about 40 per cent more higher than for white men and remain very higher than others ethnic groups in the United States. For black men, cancer according with the new cancer’s studies clarifies that is tobacco smoke the first cause of this disease; death cancer for African American males is about 35 per cent higher in males than females today. National Cancer Institute reported that four of ten cancer death in black men in United States could have been related to this disease; in 2000 the rates have been dropping but remain higher than the other ethnic groups especially white groups. Some areas of United States have strongest tobacco-control programs, like higher cigarettes taxes, antismoking education programs, and penalties for selling tobacco to minors, but the government and others no-government organization is still working in this illness. There are a lot of studies and researches, but always it is important to mention that today the people know and have more information than 10 years ago for instance; and the government is constantly educating the new generations in tobacco cancer. By the way, Reiki is an alternative therapy treatment that might be used in cancer and other diseases with interesting results, this one works with energies and could be very useful if Reiki is applied for Reiki Masters or Practitioners, research in your locality for further information.
